WISE - WIE - Picnic
WISE and WIE Carleton University together with their wider Ottawa counterparts invite you to the Britannia Park Gazebo for a summer picnic/potluck! Carleton Celebration of Women in Science and Engineering
The Carleton Celebration of Women in Science and Engineering is one of the biggest highlights of the year, and we want you to participate! This year's Celebration will showcase research and projects done by female students and faculty from Carleton in a way that is accessible to the general public, including high school students. The big day will be on Wednesday, April 6 2011, beginning at 10:00am in Porter Hall.

"WISE" Steps to Success Professional Development Event

There's more to success than just passing your courses. There are a lot of skills to be learned outside of the classroom that greatly contribute to your future. And the earlier you start learning them, the earlier you can reach your goals.
Carleton's WISE, IEEE WIE, and Career Services have joined forces to give you the career building essentials and help you stand out. Whether you are actively looking for a job or not, this is an event you don't want to miss. This year we have also teamed up with local organization Dress for Success.
The event is free for Carleton's women in sciences and engineering, and will include a light dinner and dessert. You will hear from experts on networking, the importance of making a great first impression, dressing for success, confidence building, and negotiation skills. You will also have the opportunity to speak to mentors from academia and industry, to meet other students in your field, and to practice your skills.
There will be raffle prizes to be won! Tickets can be purchased at the event, all proceeds will be donated to Dress for Success.

Faculty of Engineering Professor Moyra McDill will speak about her experiences as being the first woman to graduate from mechanical engineering.
Dress for Success Ottawa will help us make the best impression in interviews, and develop work place skills needed for effective networking. Dress for Success isn't just about clothes; their mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire and the career development tools to help them thrive in work and life.
Finally, Andrew Moizer will help us develop confidence in negotiation skills, networking, etc.

WISE Ottawa Presents: Stress and Intellectual and Emotional Knowledge
Abstract:
Intellectual knowledge, like all intellectual activities, is usually under control of an individual, and an intellectual problem remains limited and accessible to the critical thought and typically can be approached from many sides. If it is difficult to solve an intellectual problem it could be somewhat stressful, but in itself the stress is mild unless the difficulty is accompanied by an emotional response.
The truth is that all important stressful experiences originate in the realm of human emotions which have a nasty habit of evaluating everything that we do or experience. Negative evaluation is another name for stress. The worst of all we have no control over our emotions, we cannot change them. Although we cannot control our emotions and by such control avoid or lower our stressful experiences, we can significantly lower the stress of everyday life if we understand our emotions. To understand emotions means to realize that our attitude towards reality is determined by emotions, not by so called intellectual beliefs or borrowed knowledge from social conventions.

Dr. Dragoljub Radonjic is a retired Professor of Psychiatry from University of
Ottawa. He is specialist in neurology and psychiatry, and he holds a Ph.D. in
neurosciences. Before holding a position at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, he held a teaching position at the University of Belgrade, and he was a research associate at Case Western Reserve University.
