Lunch and Learn With Discovery Lecture Speaker Dr Angelica Lim

Join us for a special opportunity to meet and learn from this year's Discovery Lecture speaker, Dr Angelica Lim! Dr. Lim will tell us about her research on robots and emotions, careers in robotics, and a preview of her talk to be held later in the evening of the same day.  This event is hosted by Carleton University's Women in Science and Engineering and sponsored by the School of Computer Science.

Innovation - The most frustrating and rewarding experience you will EVER have

The process of seeing a problem as an opportunity, gaining a fundamental understanding of the nature of the problem/opportunity, having an idea for a better solution, and then building a business that will deliver that solution is fraught with great challenges and rewards. It is not for everyone. It will always require persistence, creativity, and openness to learning new things regardless of how many times you do it. And it is completely worth it. Successful innovations impact lives. There are ways to understand the value of opportunities and increase the likelihood of success. We will talk about the innovation process and some examples and how to increase your chances of a successful career in innovation.

Speaker: Lynn Leger
After completing a degree in Chemistry and an MBA, Lynn joined DuPont’s Automotive Coatings business where she held a variety of business, marketing and technical positions. Lynn then changed market focus and led new initiatives in Food Safety for DuPont including responsibility for leading major R&D initiatives in breakthrough disinfection technology. Lynn joined GreenCentre Canada in 2010 as a Director of Commercial Development and worked with universities across Canada to commercialize greener technologies. Lynn is a named inventor on 13 patent applications in technologies representing each of the different businesses with which she has been associated. She is a frequent speaker on innovation and green chemistry and will be chairing a session on commercialization of Green Chemistry at the American Chemical Society’s Green Chemistry Institute meeting this summer. Lynn is currently starting a new business, ALCERECO, that will develop and commercialize new Advanced Materials in a number of markets.

Speaker Bio
Cate has a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh but escaped from graduate school to be a Software Engineer at Google. She used to be an international hobo, teaching programming in the US and in Shanghai, training in martial arts in China, qualifying as a ski instructor in Canada, and aimlessly wandering around Europe. For now, she lives in Kitchener/Waterloo, Canada. She was the Instigator of Awesome at Awesome Ottawa, and is a co-conspirator for Awesome Foundation KW. "WISE" Steps to Success Professional Development Event

There's more to success than just passing your courses. There are a lot of skills to be learned outside of the classroom that greatly contribute to your future. And the earlier you start learning them, the earlier you can reach your goals.

Carleton's WISE, IEEE WIE, and Career Services have joined forces to give you the career building essentials and help you stand out. Whether you are actively looking for a job or not, this is an event you don't want to miss. This year we have also teamed up with local organization Dress for Success.

The event is free for Carleton's women in sciences and engineering, and will include a light dinner and dessert. You will hear from experts on networking, the importance of making a great first impression, dressing for success, confidence building, and negotiation skills. You will also have the opportunity to speak to mentors from academia and industry, to meet other students in your field, and to practice your skills.

There will be raffle prizes to be won! Tickets can be purchased at the event, all proceeds will be donated to Dress for Success.

Faculty of Engineering Professor Moyra McDill will speak about her experiences as being the first woman to graduate from mechanical engineering.

Dress for Success Ottawa will help us make the best impression in interviews, and develop work place skills needed for effective networking. Dress for Success isn't just about clothes; their mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire and the career development tools to help them thrive in work and life.

Finally, Andrew Moizer will help us develop confidence in negotiation skills, networking, etc.

Abstract:

The highly successful GeoConnections program has led to the development of a strong base upon which Canada continues to build its Spatial Data Infrastructure. The CGDI is an on-line resource that improves the sharing, access and use of geospatial information. The success around the CGDI is attributed to the planning and foresight, as the development was viewed to be more than just the infrastructure itself. An SDI requires leadership, standards, data, policies and technology to support the infrastructure. These elements, when combined with strong commitment and partnerships from government, academia, industry and non-government organizations, result in a valued national asset that is well used and supports national initiatives. This presentation will trace the development of the CGDI to its current state, outline key success factors, lessons learned, and outline potential future directions for further development of the CGDI. It will also provide an opportunity for CU Wise members to consider career options in the geospatial industry.

The Carleton Celebration of Women in Science and Engineering is a showcase of graduate students, faculty, and alumni of Carleton University. The number of women who enrol in many science and engineering programs is quite low, so the amazing things they do can easily go unnoticed. This day puts them in the spotlight.

The goal of this event is two-fold. First, we aim to provide networking opportunities for all female science and engineering students. Second, we would like to see members of the greater Carleton community attend these talks and learn about some of the great things happening in science and engineering.

Many of our speakers are presenting their research, but there are also professional development and outreach talks, inspirational stories, and a round table to discuss issues faced by women in science and engineering.

Students use social media very effectively to keep in touch with their friends, find out where the next party is and who’s dating who. These are very important components of their lives.

There will come a day when they will no longer be students and be out there climbing the corporate ladder. At that point their personal lives will begin to clash with their professional lives and they will be faced with some difficult challenges regarding their social media usage.

Should their boss be their friend? Would they want their boss to know about who they hang out with, party with and how they dress outside of work? Would they feel pressured into accepting their boss and co-workers as friends?

The decision makers within their organization assume that these students know how to use social media as in their opinion these students grew up with it. However students know to use social media for their personal lives and not professionally nor from a business context.

Natasha D’Souza is the founder of Virtual EyeSee, a Social Media Agency. Prior to this new role in social media, Natasha has had over 13 years of hi-tech experience working for fortune 500, mid-sized and start-up companies. Her experience in the private and public sectors has given her the opportunity to work in marketing, project management, business development and sales. She has a degree in Electrical Engineering.
