uOttawaWISE has another awesome speaker lined up – this time, it’s Anne Coyle, founder of Bright Red Handle, communication specialists for the IT industry. Anne has a diverse background in math, computer science, and communications. As part of our Inspiring Women Series she’ll be sharing with us what she wishes she had known before starting her business, including: how to get repeat business, how to avoid the “I’m not charging enough” trap, and the pros and cons of working from home.

Join us Monday, November 21st in STE5084 (conference room) at 6 pm for what will undoubtedly be another awesome evening. As usual, tasty dinner and refreshments will be provided.

Cate has a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh but escaped from graduate school to be a Software Engineer at Google. She used to be an international hobo, teaching programming in the US and in Shanghai, training in martial arts in China, qualifying as a ski instructor in Canada, and aimlessly wandering around Europe. For now, she lives in Kitchener/Waterloo, Canada. She was the Instigator of Awesome at Awesome Ottawa, and is a co-conspirator for Awesome Foundation KW. There's more to success than just passing your courses. There are a lot of skills to be learned outside of the classroom that greatly contribute to your future. And the earlier you start learning them, the earlier you can reach your goals.

Carleton's WISE, IEEE WIE, and Career Services have joined forces to give you the career building essentials and help you stand out. Whether you are actively looking for a job or not, this is an event you don't want to miss. This year we have also teamed up with local organization Dress for Success.

The event is free for Carleton's women in sciences and engineering, and will include a light dinner and dessert. You will hear from experts on networking, the importance of making a great first impression, dressing for success, confidence building, and negotiation skills. You will also have the opportunity to speak to mentors from academia and industry, to meet other students in your field, and to practice your skills.

There will be raffle prizes to be won! Tickets can be purchased at the event, all proceeds will be donated to Dress for Success.

Speakers

Faculty of Engineering Professor Moyra McDill will speak about her experiences as being the first woman to graduate from mechanical engineering.

Dress for Success Ottawa will help us make the best impression in interviews, and develop work place skills needed for effective networking. Dress for Success isn't just about clothes; their mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire and the career development tools to help them thrive in work and life.

Finally, Andrew Moizer will help us develop confidence in negotiation skills, networking, etc.

The highly successful GeoConnections program has led to the development of a strong base upon which Canada continues to build its Spatial Data Infrastructure. The CGDI is an on-line resource that improves the sharing, access and use of geospatial information. The success around the CGDI is attributed to the planning and foresight, as the development was viewed to be more than just the infrastructure itself. An SDI requires leadership, standards, data, policies and technology to support the infrastructure. These elements, when combined with strong commitment and partnerships from government, academia, industry and non-government organizations, result in a valued national asset that is well used and supports national initiatives. This presentation will trace the development of the CGDI to its current state, outline key success factors, lessons learned, and outline potential future directions for further development of the CGDI. It will also provide an opportunity for CU Wise members to consider career options in the geospatial industry.

This speech will focus on my experiences as a young Engineer, a Senior Researcher, a Lab-head at NRC and finally a 2-time entrepreneur. It will describe some of the myths I have encountered on this amazing journey as well as the encouragement that I received. It will also focus on the ecosystem needed to nurture more scientists and engineers in High Tech. It will also focus on what we are doing right driving innovation as well as what we need to do to improve the journey for a new generation of entrepreneurs that will be needed to drive Canada into the future.

Speaker Profile:

Dr. Sue Abu-Hakima is co-Founder, President/CEO of her second start-up Amika Mobile launched in 2007 focusing on emergency mass notification broadcasts to any network and on any device – wired or wireless. Over her 28-year career, Sue has been widely recognized as one of a handful of women technology CEOs, and has built businesses for 12 of those 28 years, based on a reputation of excellence and innovation. Sue is the driving force behind Amika Mobile. As a two-time founder/CEO, she has formed boards of directors and directs business strategy, ensuring that product development matches customer pain points. Her leadership is pivotal in securing private financing and forming strong business and technical teams. She sold the compliance business unit from her first company to Entrust (Entu on NASDAQ) in 2004. Sue transitioned the products and team as VP Content Technology at Entrust until Dec 2006. She has 20 patents and 4 more pending. Sue serves on a number of boards including OCE as well as the Private Sector Advisory Board of the NCEs at NSERC. She has created over 150 high tech jobs which OCRI multiplies by a factor of 4 for 600 service spinoff jobs. She has a B.Eng. from McGill, M.Eng. and Ph.D. from Carleton. She is an adjunct Prof at University of Ottawa. Her companies have won 19 awards and she was named CATA’s National Advanced Technology Woman Entrepreneur of 2007. In November 2008, the National Angel Capital Organization recognized Amika Mobile as a Top 5 in Ontario and a Top 10 company nationally that is angel backed for its management and results. The Carleton Celebration of Women in Science and Engineering is a showcase of graduate students, faculty, and alumni of Carleton University. The number of women who enrol in many science and engineering programs is quite low, so the amazing things they do can easily go unnoticed. This day puts them in the spotlight.

The goal of this event is two-fold. First, we aim to provide networking opportunities for all female science and engineering students. Second, we would like to see members of the greater Carleton community attend these talks and learn about some of the great things happening in science and engineering.

Many of our speakers are presenting their research, but there are also professional development and outreach talks, inspirational stories, and a round table to discuss issues faced by women in science and engineering.

Though Jill Lauren Hass currently volunteers as the WISE Communications Executive and newsletter Editor, her full-time occupation is as an engineer employed in the private sector within the water and wastewater industry. Previously, she paid her dues working and volunteering in Central and South American countries for grassroots, international non-government organizations by working with local communities to secure good water and sanitation for themselves. Jill will present a two part seminar for WISE members interested in volunteering their high skill set abroad. First she will share her most recent experience in Africa and secondly she will also provide attendees with options for volunteering abroad on a long-term project or short-term emergency deployment. If you have ever found yourself wondering what it would be like to volunteer on an overseas project but weren’t sure how to become involved or what it entailed, this seminar will provide you with valuable information.

Students use social media very effectively to keep in touch with their friends, find out where the next party is and who’s dating who. These are very important components of their lives.

There will come a day when they will no longer be students and be out there climbing the corporate ladder. At that point their personal lives will begin to clash with their professional lives and they will be faced with some difficult challenges regarding their social media usage.

Should their boss be their friend? Would they want their boss to know about who they hang out with, party with and how they dress outside of work? Would they feel pressured into accepting their boss and co-workers as friends?

The decision makers within their organization assume that these students know how to use social media as in their opinion these students grew up with it. However students know to use social media for their personal lives and not professionally nor from a business context.

Natasha D’Souza is the founder of Virtual EyeSee, a Social Media Agency. Prior to this new role in social media, Natasha has had over 13 years of hi-tech experience working for fortune 500, mid-sized and start-up companies. Her experience in the private and public sectors has given her the opportunity to work in marketing, project management, business development and sales. She has a degree in Electrical Engineering.

WISE Ottawa Presents: Stress and Intellectual and Emotional Knowledge

Abstract:

Intellectual knowledge, like all intellectual activities, is usually under control of an individual, and an intellectual problem remains limited and accessible to the critical thought and typically can be approached from many sides. If it is difficult to solve an intellectual problem it could be somewhat stressful, but in itself the stress is mild unless the difficulty is accompanied by an emotional response.

The truth is that all important stressful experiences originate in the realm of human emotions which have a nasty habit of evaluating everything that we do or experience. Negative evaluation is another name for stress. The worst of all we have no control over our emotions, we cannot change them. Although we cannot control our emotions and by such control avoid or lower our stressful experiences, we can significantly lower the stress of everyday life if we understand our emotions. To understand emotions means to realize that our attitude towards reality is determined by emotions, not by so called intellectual beliefs or borrowed knowledge from social conventions.

Speaker:
Dr. Dragoljub Radonjic is a retired Professor of Psychiatry from University of
Ottawa. He is specialist in neurology and psychiatry, and he holds a Ph.D. in
neurosciences. Before holding a position at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, he held a teaching position at the University of Belgrade, and he was a research associate at Case Western Reserve University.

CU-WISE is hosting a panel discussion on "Advice for First Year Students in Science and Engineering" where the panelists will share with you what it's like to be in a male-dominated program, giving you tips on how to succeed in your courses, and answering your questions. It's Not Women That Need Fixing - A Discussion on Policies Focusing on WISE

Since the 1980s, the low ratio of women in science and engineering has received increased attention. A number of activities, programs, projects, and initiatives have since then been set up, often with an underlying assumption that it is women that are the problem and need treatment. In this talk Christine will take a critical look at some of these policies, and discuss suggestions for future activities and focuses.

Dr. Christine Waechter is an Associate Professor and Scientific Director of the Centre of Women Studies and Gender Research at Klagenfurt University, Austria. She is also Director of the Inter-University Research Centre for Technology, Work and Culture (IFZ), the Graz branch of Klagenfurt University. Her main fields of interest are: Gender and technology, female perspectives on sustainable technology design, quantitative and qualitative measures to improve the status of women in science and engineering

Dr. Suzanne Fortier, President of Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)

Dr. Fortier has served as President of NSERC since January 2006. Before her appointment to this position, she was a member of Queen's University as Professor in both the Department of Chemistry and the School of Computing. She also served as Vice-Principal (Research) from 1995 to 2000 and Vice-Principal (Academic) from 2000 to 2005.

Dr. Fortier is a crystallographer by training, specializing in the development of mathematical and artificial intelligence methodologies for protein structure determination.

An Alternative to a Career in Academics: Life After the Lab

Presented by: Claire Palmer, PhD.

Claire Palmer received a PhD in Molecular Biology from McMaster University. She drafts and prosecutes patents in a broad range of technologies including biotechnology, biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, microbiology, biology, molecular biology, bioremediation, biological wastewater treatment and other "green" technologies.

Dr. Palmer will talk about the role of scientists and engineers in facilitating obtaining and keeping meaningful patent protection. In particular, Claire will be talking about her role as a Patent Agent in an intellectual property law firm. She will highlight things to consider when choosing a career outside the lab and offer some suggestions to those who may wish to follow a similar career path. Claire will be happy to answer questions about life as a patent agent and discuss the transition from lab work to office work.

Domestic Abuse: What every woman should know

"1 out of 4 women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime", "70% of domestic abuse is non-physical" www.shalvaonline.org

The Neighbours, Friends and Families Campaign has offered to do a presentation for CU-WISE about domestic abuse toward women. The goal of their presentation is to provide awareness about how to recognize a woman who is abused (whether physically, verbally, or emotionally), how to approach her in a discussion, and how to get her to safety. The presentation includes a documentary.

Inspiring Women by Carleton's President

Presented by: Dr. Roseann Runte, Carleton's first female President and Vice-Chancellor.

Dr. Runte graduated with a BA summa cum laude in French from the State University of New York and obtained her MA and PhD from the University of Kansas. She has previously served as president of l'Université Sainte-Anne, principal of Glendon College, president of Victoria University and of Old Dominion University.

Dr. Runte is the author of numerous scholarly works in the fields of French and comparative literature and has written extensively on economic and cultural development, higher education and the importance of research.

Dr. Runte has been awarded the Order of Canada and the French Order of Merit and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She has also been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, the Palmes Académiques and several awards for her work on the environment and for community and national service. In addition, Dr. Runte holds a number of honorary degrees.

As professionals in science and engineering, potential is a key driver underpinning what we do everyday. A good idea is followed by a lot of research and development and where things go from there will depend on our objectives and how we communicate information about the potential we commit ourselves to explore and develop. Planning and publicity are a given, but partnership with others is required to make a good idea practically accessible to the public. Patents are one tool for fostering those partnerships and what they are and how they can be used to enhance the research and development process will be canvassed.

This talk will be based on an article written by CU-WISE in the CSES Iron Times Newsletter . We have some special guests attending to answer your questions. It's a great opportunity to meet other members of CU-WISE!

This event is focused on first year students, but upper year students are also needed to allow the first years to network with them. So please come out and welcome them!

Professional Series: Bio Aikawa

Bio Aikawa obtained her Ph.D. degree in 2001 at Carleton University. She is currently working in Health Canada in the Existing Substances Division - Bureau of Risk and Impact Assessment - Healthy Environments and Consumer Safety Branch.
Her talk focused on her education, career and experiences about being a woman in science and engineering.
